Signs are that people are making the most of the first year of the increased Isa allowance for all investors. In the first nine months of this tax year Britons invested a total of £2.8 billion in stocks-and-shares Isas — the fourth-biggest figure since Isas were introduced in 1999. Billions more have been ploughed into cash Isas.
There is also an underrated benefit: you don’t have to declare details of your Isa investments on your tax form.
Although the attractions of Isas may have been watered down over the years, they still carry significant tax privileges. Since these tax breaks cannot be carried over from one year to another, it’s a case of use them or lose them, by April 5.
